Alleged terror suspects face prosecutor in Morocco

RABAT (AFP) - Moroccan police presented 35 alleged members of an Islamic extremist terrorist movement before the state prosecutor in Rabat on Thursday, after a wave of arrests. Many of the 35 were said to be led by Abdelkader Belliraj, who was among the first arrested, and who has dual Moroccan and Belgian nationality. Belliraj is a prime suspect in six unexplained killings in Belgium between 1986 and 1989. They suspects were brought to Rabat under heavy police escort from the northern port of Casablanca. A legal source said members of the network face nine criminal charges, including murder and attempted murder with firearms, robbery, money laundering, criminal association with terrorist intent and forging official and identity documents.

Facebook Denies Role in Morocco Arrest

SAN FRANCISCO — The social-networking start-up Facebook Inc. said it didn’t give the Moroccan government information to identify a user who was arrested for impersonating a Moroccan prince on the Web site.

Morocco urges Algiers, Polisario to be "positive" on Western Sahara

Rabat, Morocco - Morocco has called on Algeria and the Polisario Front to be “positive” during the fourth round of talks on the Western Sahara conflict 16-18 March in Manhasset, a suburb in New York. The talks are being held under the supervision of the UN. The last three rounds of talks between Morocco and the Polisario Front in Manhasset have not produced a solution to the lingering Western Sahara conflict.

Moroccan Prime Minsiter, Abbas El Fassi, issued on Wednesday a decree dissolving the Islamist party “Al Badil Al Hadari” (Civilzational Alternative), as part of the dismantling of a terrorist network described as “Jihadist” earlier this week.

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenyans moved to put one of their country’s darkest chapters behind them on Friday after the president and opposition leader agreed to power-sharing aimed at ending a bloody post-election political crisis.

President Mwai Kibaki and his rival Raila Odinga signed the deal setting up a coalition government on Thursday after a month of often bitter negotiations punctuated by riots and ethnic violence around the east African nation.

The two men had come under huge pressure from world powers and Kenya’s 36 million people to find a solution to forestall more bloodshed and help repair the country’s reputation as the region’s business, tourism and transport hub. Read more
